Hosted by the melting pot Formed in 2007 the old school film Society has presented an exciting and ecclectic mix of film events. The society launched with the 1980's cult family film 'The Goonies'. The following month the OSFS presented 'Hedwig and the angry inch' in which a transexual punk rock girl from East Berlin tours the US with her rock band as she tells her life story and follows the ex-boyfriend/bandmate who stole her songs. Presented as a Saturday Matinee the next film to grace the screen at the melting pot was the masterful Studio Ghibli animation 'Princess Mononoke' where on a journey to find the cure for a Tatarigami's curse, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest and Tataraba, a mining colony. In this quest he also meets San, the Mononoke Hime. While we are committed to the films remaining as the centre piece for the OSFS we decided that it would be fun to create events that compliment the films that we are presenting. Now if you attend an OSFS screening you will enjoy a full and enjoyable program that may include live music, interesting guest speakers, food, dancers, etc. The first of these film happenings was our Cornish Independance night at which we presented the Ealing classic 'Passport to Pimlico' preceeded by Nick Darke's short film 'Breaking the chains'. The evening was complimented by a discussion about the Cornish Charter led by guest speaker Nigel Hicks from the Cornish Stannary Parliament. The evening was rounded of wonderfully with traditional Cornish Folk music played live by 'Hedra'. As an Easter Treat the OSFS screened 'Chocolat' with a tasty demonstration on the art of chocolate making from Perranporth based Chocolatier Maggie Hockings who runs Chocolicious. For the final film in the Old School Film Society's first season we presented the highly enlightening documentary feature film 'The Power Of Community:How Cuba Survived Peak Oil'. This was followed by a livley and interesting disscussion exploring sustainable development with guest speakers Oliver Baines former chief executive of the Cornwall Rural Community Council and Matt Hocking from Cornish company Leap Media.
